Celebrating Pride Month with Nate Rhoton
To celebrate the start of Pride Month, we interviewed Nate Rhoton, CEO of one-n-ten and Valley Leadership’s Institute Class 38 Alumni, to discuss the importance of hard conversations and how to approach them.
We discussed the history of one-n-ten’s 30 years of serving the LGBTQ+ community as well as Rhoton’s commitment to nonprofit service, including serving on the Arizona steering committee of the Human Rights Campaign, on the board of the Greater Phoenix Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, on the LGBTQ Advisory to the Chancellor of Maricopa County Community Colleges, and much more.
Rhoton describes crucial conversations as a vital element of his leadership journey, and necessary to support individual identity as well as put Arizona First.
Here are some key suggestions for how to navigate hard conversations:
- Meet people where they are instead of expecting them to see things from your own perspective
- Talk with each other and not at each other
- Find commonalities in both of your values and understand that we are more alike than we are different
